5 Self-Care Habits For Better Living.

0

Self Care is fast becoming one of the most talked about subjects in recent times. More and more people of middle to advanced age groups, are giving in to the different activities that define Self-care. Although a school of thought believe the movement to be selfish, given to its name, some others believe that intentionally imbibing certain habits, is in fact, a way of showing love to oneself.

Wellness experts, psychologists, even doctors advice that most Self-care activities help deal with the stress of daily living. The more you these activities are part of your routine, the better your general well-being.

All the de-stress exercises in the world may not be completely effective until taking care of yourself becomes a habit.

Most times, when Self-care is mentioned, pursuits like skincare, spa dates, solo dates, come to mind. These are definitely different ways we can spend our time, with excellent results.

But here are also 5 other inexpensive forms of Self Care:

1. Smiling & Laughing Often

As minor as this may sound, it is very important. Research has shown that a simple smile can act on your body and mind in amazing ways, offering benefits for your health, your mood, and even the moods of people around you.

It’s interesting to note that you don’t have to wait for a trigger. Even when things are not looking up, laugh out loud.

A way to achieve this is to keep your mind on things that encourage you, whatever or whoever that may be. Also, avoid negativity. Frankly, you don’t have to be aware of everything that’s going on. If it’ll affect your peace, you’re better off staying off of it.

2. Saying ‘NO’ (avoid people pleasing)

A quote by Claudia Black goes thus: “saying no can be the ultimate self-care”.

You can be a kind, generous, loving person and still say ‘NO!’. With no explanations given. By all means, do go the extra mile. Make time for your family, friends, and partner. Show up, and as much as you can, show out.

However, if the situation gets in the way of your beliefs, principles, values, be courageous enough to decline.

3. Being Kind To Yourself

Unfortunately, we can be both our biggest cheerleaders, and our worst enemies. So you made a mistake. Big deal. So has everyone. Even the most ‘perfect’ of persons.

So you’re not where you want to be yet. Big deal. Man’s needs are insatiable.

What’s to say that that’s the job you were supposed to be doing? Or the person you were supposed to be married to?

Give yourself grace. Let go of what you can’t control. Learn to talk kindly to yourself. For instance: rather than asking “how could I have acted so foolishly?”, you can go “I did what I thought was best in the moment. I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll do better. I can do better”. That’s self-care.

4. Practice Gratitude; own a ‘gratitude jar’

A form of practicing gratitude is to own a Gratitude Jar. This is an age long practice where little handwritten notes containing special events or experiences, big or small, are stored in a jar or container. It could be done daily, or weekly, or monthly. Any pattern you decide should be done consistently. At the end of the year, preferably the 31st of December, the notes are read out loud.

The essence of this is to remind you of your blessings throughout the year.

When we are aware of our blessings, we’re more inclined to live in a constant state of gratitude. By taking the time to be intentionally grateful, we focus less on what’s lacking in our environment.

Research has it that Gratitude helps improve moods, builds positive attitude, and strengthens both physical and mental well-being.

5. Sleep

Think back to the last time you got as much as 5 hours of sleep. How did you feel afterwards? Restful? Revived? Re-energized?

Developing healthy sleeping habits has many benefits, and has been proven to reduce the risk of long-term issues such as depression.

You deserve a couple hours rest, so give that to yourself today. Your mind, and body will thank you.

5 Tips For Thriving In ANY Work Environment

0

Work Environments differ; from physical offices to remote and hybrid positions. But they all involve interaction with other people, and the expenditure of effort. The average time spent in a work environment is estimated to be about 40 hours a week, and these tips are sure to open your mind to known, and unknown ways to make the most of the time.

Learn People Skills

Although there are elements that are peculiar to certain environments, e.g culture, a major constant is people.

Cambridge Dictionary explains People Skills as the ability to communicate with people in a friendly way and therefore deal with them effectively, especially in business. It is essential to learn (yes, it can be learnt) how to relate with different individuals.

In any Work Environment, one can find people of different backgrounds, races, and nuances. Understanding on a general scale how humans behave will help you deal with just about any one. But observing and understanding how your co-workers behave will make you everyone’s favorite work buddy.

Be intentional when interacting with your co-workers. Take the time to ask (respectfully) about their weekend, family, religious or social associations.

Get Integrated In Office Matters

The ‘integration’ in this case is a personal move. And is best applied in a physical work environment.

It is a process that requires you to intentionally get involved in the occasional after-hours hangout, chit-chat, birthday greetings, exchange of gifts on special occasions, etc. Shutting everyone out for 12 hours every work day because ‘you want to avoid the office drama’, could hurt you in the end. If there’s something worth knowing, you might be the last to know.

This may be a bit difficult for you if you’re an introvert, but it plays a huge part in portraying you as a team player.

Use Affirmations

A cheerful attitude is often seen as a reaction to an action and not the other way round. But maintaining a stable, positive mindset, and keeping a smile on your face motivates people around you. There’s no reason work time can’t be enjoyable, even when your co-workers or boss are giving you a hard time.

Before stepping out of your house, or maybe during the drive to work (or before plugging in your workstation in a remote situation), take the time to affirm to yourself words that’ll build your confidence. Research has shown that the start of your day affects your mood or output throughout the day. No one wants to work with a grumpy person in any work environment.

Showcase Your Skills

If you’re adept at a particular thing, a task, or the use of a software or equipment, be bold enough to let it show. You most likely will not learn, and attain a leadership position if you allow fear to win.

Let your employer, co-workers know (not in a condescending way) that you’re the best guy for xyz. This is a necessary step for growth, both in skills and in career.

What’s more, you would quickly become indispensable.

Go the extra mile by doing what most would run away from, but be careful not to take on more than you can handle. You do not want to be seen as unreliable.

Understand The Culture

Research finds that there are over 10 types of Workplace Culture.  The culture of every work environment is, in most cases, made clear to every employee from orientation. Be attentive and observant. Learn and imbibe the culture at play in your office.

The popular statement “when in Rome” should be a mantra as you resume each day. Learn the chain of command, how your superiors and colleagues, prefer to be addressed, how innovations and efforts are received and rewarded, etc. There will be little to no friction when you’ve mastered your office culture.

Conclusion

A wise saying goes thus: “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”.

The above tips are to aid in better productivity at your job, but the onus lies majorly on you. Build skills around your passion. Be open to learning. And see yourself grow.

Wedding Checklist; from the desk of a wedding lover.

0

It’s engagement season!

Every time you come on the internet, someone is kneeling down, and someone else is crying amidst screams of “say yes!” from friends and loved ones. We’re here for it.

We love to see the big smiles, and dare I say, teeny tiny tears in the eyes of both the gentleman and lady. These videos and pictures put smiles on all our faces.

With all the love in the air (even past valentine’s), we’ve put together a checklist to get you going on your nuptial planning journey.

Yes, you summoned the courage to ask.

And your partner agreed.

Yes, your friends and family approve.

And you’ve now secured a wedding planner.

This is all great. But aside from venue, rings, and outfits, there are a few other important things you may not have put into consideration, as you get ready to say “I do”.

This article will bring to light those things you may consider inconsequential, that could result in unwanted drama on your big day.

Guest Seating Arrangement

You may not know every aunt or uncle from both your families, but you wouldn’t want to seat people who are loggerheads next to each other. Even though they share a last name, chances are arguments may erupt from the mildest of things. And you’ll agree that public-settlement-of-age-long-disputes is not a great wedding aesthetic.

The best way to go about this is to ask questions. Ask your parents about that aunt and this cousin. Inquire about how well they get along. Find out who gets along with who.

It’s safer to seat family members who haven’t seen each other in a while, together. From your end, you would see high fives, hugs, and laughter from shared jokes. This is sure to put everyone in a great mood.

Additionally, insist that your wedding planner, or wedding committee ensures that everyone seats at their designated spots.

Caterer Competence

I can’t stress this enough; just because someone recommended a caterer to you (family member or commercial vendor) with high praise, does not mean the food would be a 5-star rating.

Believe it or not, I’ve come to know that one of the top reasons people attend weddings is for the food. After the wedding, everyone should still be raving about the food.

Wondering how to hack this? Ask for a taste pack.

Request for taste packs of all the meals that would be served at your event. They should be sent to you or your partner, before the big day.

Master of Ceremonies or Comedian

After the couple and the family, the next important person on your special day is the Master of Ceremonies.

It really isn’t important if they’re famous or not. The focus should be on their ability to understand your vision, and capability in bringing it to life.

Do you want a ‘black tie’, or formal wedding reception?

Maybe your vision is to put the audience in a ‘laugh and forget your sorrow’ mood.

You could want a blend of both. The best person to perform this miracle is the event anchor or compere.

In order to avoid cringing every time you watch your wedding video, because of how unexpectedly the compere handled the occasion, do well to have a sit-down with one or more persons, for interviews and preparation. “Yes, he handled my wedding”, or, “weren’t you at my cousin’s wedding? She did a good job” would not suffice.

Music Jamboree

Okay. Before you say “I already made arrangements for this”, let me share a story with you.

I once attended a wedding reception where the couple looked uncomfortable because the DJ kept playing songs they didn’t agree with. I wondered why they didn’t march up to the DJ and insist on their choice. It was later learned that the parents had chosen the playlist.

Although there have been occasions where the DJ or Band goes rogue even after being told what to do, those cases are very few. You and your partner can send your preferred playlist, or even explain your music mood/theme to the Band. Then from song to song, there wouldn’t be a single down moment at the ceremony. Need I add that it is of little consequence if your family or guests agree with your choice of genre?

Truly, It can not be overemphasized how important the day is, but the most important thing is to have fun!

Ps, if there are things you think should be added, kindly leave a comment. It could help the next bride and groom.

Customer Retention: proven strategies for your business.

The major aim of every business is to make profit. And the group of people responsible for bringing about profits, are the customers or consumers.

These days, finding a similar product or service is just a click away. So how do you keep customers coming back for more in a crowded marketplace?

Customers come and go, many times without explanations. They’re always on the lookout for something fresh.

Managing your customers, and retaining them is just as important as getting new ones. It involves innovative strategies that protect your investment by ensuring your customers are satisfied and stay interested. Customer Satisfaction births Customer loyalty, which in turn could make your customers advocates or ambassadors for your brand.

Whether your store is a virtual or physical one, these tips will keep your Customer Retention Rate above 10%, which is a good number.

  1. Outstanding Customer Experience: it’s no wonder that this is the first strategy. It is a proven trick. It is the cornerstone of customer retention, and eventually, increased profits. From inquiry to final payment, customers must be treated with patience, and a pleasant attitude. Regardless of if they’re your first or 50th customer for the day, they must be treated like they’re highly important. Therefore, It is fitting to train your sales representatives, and cashiers in excellent customer service and support.

If you run a virtual store, ensure that inquiries are promptly responded to. Your website should be user-friendly; easy to understand and maneuver.

  1. Sustained Customer Relationship: Building customer relations goes beyond buying and selling. It also includes the following:

a) Social Media Interaction: when people come in contact with your online business pages, they should be transfixed. Create engaging, relatable, user-generated content and campaigns.

b)After-sales Support: in cases where the customer requires assistance with coupling or fixing, and learning to use electronic or technical products, the staff should be able and ready to provide such aid.

c)Personalization: customers like it when messages or emails contain their names. It gives a feeling of familiarity. .If possible, include customers’ special days in your data, to enable you to send birthday messages, and gifts. This expresses how valued a customer is to your existence.

  1.  Systematic Rewards and Benefits:

Follow up your customers with holiday discounts, or gifts. You could also give referral benefits; i.e. any customer who shops from you through the good word of another customer, could get a gift or discount on their next purchase.

  1. Stay Relevant:

As I mentioned earlier, customers are always on the lookout for something new, fresh. They’re most likely to keep coming back to a brand where value increases from time to time. Come up with ideas to improve your services. Research customers’ ever-changing needs to keep up with, or even stay ahead of the market trends in your industry.

Keeping a business involves a lot more than product sales. As a CEO, taking the necessary steps to make certain that everyone who walks into your store, virtual or physical, does not leave with a sour taste in their mouth, is of great importance..

From Slum to Success: the Tunde Onakoya Story

Another monumental record has been broken! Shouts of joy and excitement fill the air. It’s a good day to be a Nigerian, as Nigerian chess master, and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya succeeds in breaking the Guinness World Record for longest hours playing chess. This historic accomplishment lasted 58 hours, beating the former record of 56 hours and 9 minutes, and 37 seconds. The former record was achieved by Norwegian duo, Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad, in 2018.

The game took place at the iconic Times Square in New York city, from the 17th of April, to the 19th of April, 2024.

29 years old Tunde Onakoya played alongside fellow National Chess Master, Shawn Martinez of Brooklyn, USA. Both players played against each other throughout the marathon.

They were continuously serenaded by African music, while onlookers and supporters encouraged them with cheers and applause.

The chess expert first announced his intention days ago on his X page, to break the Guinness World Record for longest chess marathon without losing a game.

He maintained that the dedication to seeing the tournament through is aimed at becoming a beacon of hope for underprivileged children across Africa.  “With the ultimate goal of raising $1,000,000 to advance the education of these deserving individuals, every contribution, whether big or small, brings us closer to realizing this noble vision.”

Congratulations, and donations are already pouring in. Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Vice President, Kashim Shettima and Singers Davido, and Adekunle Gold, have shown support for the chess maestro.

Background

Tunde’s chess journey started in childhood. He was born and raised in the slums in Ikorodu, Lagos, and learned to play chess in a barbershop. While getting his diploma in Computer Science from the Yaba College of Technology, he won a gold medal in the Nigeria Polytechnic Games. His other championships include the National Friends of Chess and the Chevron Chess Open.

Onakoya believes that the game of chess saved him from the immense poverty he faced while growing up with his family in Lagos’s slums.

His Organization: Chess in Slums Africa

In 2018, Tunde Onakoya started the non-profit organization, Chess in Slums Africa. The core aim of the organization is to empower illiterate children from impoverished communities across the continent.

According to Wikipedia, Chess in Slums Africa had trained over 200 children and got lifelong scholarships for 20 of them as of June 2021.

BBC also reports that “Onakoya is also a board member of the US non-profit The Gift of Chess, which works to transform lives through chess and is targeting to distribute one million chess sets to undeserved communities by 2030”.

Pelumi Nubi: One Woman Army

Travel enthusiast and lifestyle influencer, Pelumi Nubi arrived in the bustling city of Lagos, on the 7th of April, 2024, to a hero’s homecoming.

The University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria, received Miss Nubi with “with carnival-like performances courtesy of students of Creative Arts Department and University of Lagos International School (ISL) as well as cheers from the crowd of admirers and well wishers who had awaited her arrival not minding the scorching sun”-unilag.edu.ng

It all began at the beginning of the year. Whilst many were making new year resolutions, Nigerian-born Pelumi Nubi decided to take it a step further by seeing her audacious dream through. Determined to drive solo from London to Lagos, she took a trip that no other black woman had ever taken.  “As far as I know, no black woman has made this journey before. But hey, this isn’t about breaking records. It’s about showing the world that ‘impossible’ is just a word, especially when you’ve got enough grit and determination”, she gushed in a recent interview with The Tribune.

After voyaging from France, to Spain, and then Morocco, she eventually made it into West African terrains. She drove through countries like Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, amongst others. Each time she entered a new country, there was always a welcome party at different locations, in her honor.

Her trip, which took approximately 68 days, started on the 30th of January, 2024, and concluded on the 7th of April, 2024.

Pelumi’s journey was not without unfortunate circumstances. On the 26th of March, she posted a photo of her wrecked Peugeot 107, nicknamed Lumi, on her Instagram page with a one-line caption “pray for me”. You would think that the incident would deter her.  But the very next day, she was back at it, traveling through Ivory Coast where the accident had occurred.

When asked in a recent interview why she chose to do this, Miss Nubi responded “I was trying to connect the two places I consider home. I was born in Lagos and I grew up in London, so I wanted to connect both places. Usually, I would fly in, but most times, I wanted to see what West Africa is like and this was an opportunity to do so. In terms of over land travel, there was not enough representation.

There were not enough people that looked like me. This would inspire the next generation of young women that they can do daring things, they can step out of their comfort zone and change the narrative of the African continent out there. This journey is opening up the world to other people to visit the continent.”

In a rewarding turn of events, The Lagos State government honored her with a home, a car, and an ambassadorial position.

Though Pelumi Nubi has now become a pointer to everyone afraid to do anything, this is definitely not the last of her exploits yet.

In her words, “honestly, society will tell you what to believe and most times society tells you that you’re not good enough. It tells you that you’re not qualified enough and it will be a double tragedy, if you put those assumptions and beliefs on yourself. I honestly believe that, yes, society can disqualify me, but I’m not going to disqualify myself.”

Mavin Records Meets Universal Music Group

0

Universal Music Group, one of the titans in the global music industry, recently made a significant investment move by acquiring majority stakes worth a staggering $125 million in Mavin Records. This strategic acquisition marks a pivotal moment in the trajectory of Mavin Records, also known as Supreme Mavin Dynasty, a company that has solidified its position as one of Africa’s foremost music labels since its inception on May 8, 2012, by D’banj (Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo) and Don Jazzy (Michael Collins Ajereh).

Don Jazzy, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Afrobeat music, is a Nigerian record producer, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He co-founded Mo’ Hits Records in 2004 with D’banj, producing numerous hit songs that gained international recognition. Following the dissolution of Mo’ Hits Records, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records in 2012, which has become synonymous with innovation and excellence in the African music industry.

From its roots as Mo’Hits Records, Mavin Records has nurtured and propelled numerous talents to stardom, boasting a roster that has included luminaries such as Ikechukwu, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Di’ja, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, and newer sensations like Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, Rema, Ladipoe, among others. The label’s legacy extends beyond music, shaping careers in various creative industries.

Under the visionary leadership of Don Jazzy, alongside Tega Oghenejobo as the Chief Operating Officer, the record label has consistently delivered chart-topping albums and garnered a slew of prestigious awards. Beyond artistic achievements, the label has also made significant strides in the business realm. In January 2019, Mavin Records secured a substantial investment from Kupanda Holdings, a partnership between TPG Growth and Kupanda Capital, renowned investors in leading streaming services like Spotify. This infusion of capital fortified Mavin’s footprint across marketing, publishing, and strategic partnerships.

Crucially, the recent partnership between Universal Music Group and Mavin Records underscores the label’s commitment to maintaining its independence in matters of creativity, strategic planning, and artist development. Despite the monumental deal, Mavin Records remains steadfast in its mission to foster originality and innovation.

In tandem with its business successes, Mavin Records has witnessed exponential growth in its artists’ social media presence, transforming them into household names. This meteoric rise is a testament to Don Jazzy’s ambitious vision of positioning the empire as the preeminent music powerhouse in Africa—a goal that transcends mere rhetoric and is steadily becoming a reality.

IWAJU- The Future Is Here

When Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku, Oluwafikayo Ziki Adeola, and Hamid Ibrahim got together and founded Kugali, an entertainment company, in 2017, little did they know that their first full fledged movie project, in partnership with Walt Disney, would win over the hearts Sci-fi, Futuristic movie lovers, all over the world.

Iwájú, a Yoruba term for ‘Forward’ or ‘Front’ is an animated 6-part series, set in vibrant, futuristic Lagos, that tells the story of two Nigerian friends, Tola (Simisola Gbadamosi) and Kole (Siji Soetan), on a journey, while embracing the technological innovations of that age.

Though the story may seem far-fetched (it is after all, set in the future), the writers’ use of relatable slangs and portrayal of the regular Lagosian lifestyle, provides a cure for the homesickness many viewers in diaspora may be dealing with.

The attention of international audiences is at a stand still, as this is the first time a Pan-African entertainment company in partnership with Walt Disney studios is bringing a local story to life.

This feat that started as a “prophecy”, made by Kugali co-founders, and creators of Iwájú, in an interview with BBC in 2019, where they shared their dream to make an animation that Disney studios would not be able to resist partnering in, has now blossomed into a wake-up call for foreign major entertainment companies, on the untapped creative resources in Africa.

In the words of Nollywood actor, Femi Branch, who voices Bode, “It’s a groundbreaking thing for our industry, Nollywood, for African filmmakers, for African animators.”

Truly, Iwájú, as the name implies, or also put “Ojo Iwájú” which is “Future” in the Yoruba language, represents a tenable step in the right direction for movie creators, and lovers alike in Africa. The movie is expected to prove the notion that Nigeria, and Africa at large, is a forward-thinking state.

From Prison to Palace: Senegal’s Youngest President – Bassirou Diomaye Faye – Takes the Reins

Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. Just weeks ago, the 44-year-old emerged from prison, a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. Today, he stands on the precipice of history, sworn in as Senegal’s youngest president.

Diomaye, as he is popularly called, wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, nor with a preordained path to the presidency. Born on March 25, 1980, in a bustling Senegalese village to a Senegalese father and a Zambian mother, his early life held no hints of the political firestorm he’d ignite. Yet, beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary childhood, simmered a potent mix of ambition and unwavering spirit.

Faye’s journey began in Ndiaganiao, where he diligently navigated the local school system, his thirst for knowledge a flickering flame. His academic pursuit culminated in a law degree from Dakar University, a stepping stone on his path to an unexpected career as a tax inspector at the age of 30.

It was within the dry confines of the Tax and Estates department that Faye’s life took a dramatic turn. Enter Ousmane Sonko, a charismatic figure who would become Faye’s political soulmate. Their camaraderie blossomed, igniting a shared passion for change. The fledgling Patriots of Senegal (PASTEF) became their political battleground. Faye, a natural strategist with a keen eye for the political chessboard, soared through PASTEF’s ranks, becoming Sonko’s right-hand man. He orchestrated Sonko’s presidential campaign with a brilliance that sent shivers down the spines of the political establishment.

But Faye’s fiery advocacy came at a cost. Accusations of spreading dissent and undermining state security landed him in jail. Yet, imprisonment couldn’t extinguish the burning embers of his ambition. In a stroke of fate as dramatic as any political thriller, Sonko passed the presidential torch to the 44-year-old Faye.

Undeterred by his ordeal, Faye emerged from prison a symbol of hope and resilience. His first rally, electric with the fervor of his supporters, particularly the youth, marked a turning point. Today, as Senegal celebrates its youngest president ever, Faye’s story stands as a beacon of inspiration. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit that can rewrite destinies and reshape nations.

Aisha Yesufu: all you need to know about this Wonder Woman

0

“One of them had pushed me and the raised hand might be what some saw as a slap. No, I wasn’t slapped and I refused to cower and I turned and gave them a piece of what I thought of their pathetic selves and if I am going to die, it would be with my fist high up and my mouth open”.

This is the kind of woman, Aisha Somtochukwu Yesufu is.

Fearless, determined, and dedicated. One could say that these three words sum up her life. From refusing to be married as a child, though born and raised in the north, to moving on to Ahmadu Bello University after her application to The Nigerian Defense Academy was rejected on the basis of her gender, Aisha has never been one to back down from a challenge.

The Guardian 2016 wrote of Mrs Yesufu “Often maligned for her stance on national issues in Nigeria by pro-government voices, she is not a run-of-the-mill activist. Her penchant for naming names has earned her truckloads of enemies, and perhaps, admirers”.

Her major public activism move started after the Chibok Girls Abduction in 2014, by the nefarious sect, Boko Haram. She teamed up with Oby Ezekwesili, former minister of Solid Minerals of Nigeria, and started the #bringbackourgirls movement to advocate for their rescue.

In october 2020, Aisha shows up again, more daring than ever. She stands, fist high, face to face with armed officials, at the fore front of #EndSars protests, a movement that seeks to end Police Brutality & Injustice.

Since then, anywhere the #EndSars movement is mentioned, a photo of Aisha Yesufu poised in her hijab, has become the iconic symbol.

Aisha Somtochukwu has many acclaims to her name. Namely: The Martin Luther King Award, BBC’s 100 women in 2020, Top 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine in 2020. Reputation Poll International (RPI) also named her as one of the 14 Nigerians made the list of ‘100 most reputable Africans, in 2023.
